They’ve always stuck to their guns as to what they wanted to do and it’s paid off. All these years later and they are still putting out great music. Alternate Versions: Nine Inch Nails- Only EL-P Mix

maxresdefault.jpg

NEW TOPIC!!!!! This new topic is all about alternate versions of songs you know. I’ll be showcasing different remixes, demos, and live versions of songs.

Let’s start off with a really fun one. Back in 2005 Nine Inch Nails released the album With Teeth. As always with Nine Inch Nails releases, there comes remix versions of songs. On the Every Day is Exactly The Same remix EP, there is a version of the song “Only” remixed by the one and only EL-P, and it’s fantastic. EL-P’s mix, gives it a bit more atmosphere and it makes the song a bit more haunting. Enjoy!

Guest Guitarist: Stephen Carpenter of Deftones

There are many guitarists out there that have such a signature sound that, when you hear it you know just who is playing. Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter is one of those guitarists. His style is undeniable and it works across many different bands and their material. So, with that in mind, here are a few of the jams Stephen has lent his playing to over the years.

Band Of The Week: Moon Tooth

The band I’m presenting to you this week is going to rock your world. They are heavy, aggressive, progressive and absolutely badass. I’d like to introduce you all to your new favorite band, Moon Tooth. Straight up, these guys are awesome. The four members of Moon Tooth, John Carbone (vocals), Nick Lee (guitars), Vincent Romanelli (bass) and Ray Marte (drums) are not only are they masters of their instruments and rip and shred but, their ability to write great songs makes them truly standout. They remind me a bit of Mastodon meets The Dillinger Escape Plan with a ton of melody and 70’s prog. Their 2016 debut album, Chromaparagon is pretty damn great from start to finish. I could use many adjectives to describe how good it is but, you should just listen and you’ll understand why Moon Tooth is great. Now in 2019, Moon Tooth is gearing up to unleash a new album entitled Crux (out March 29th). The first single released, “Trust” is the logical next step for the band and it crushes. The band worked with Lamb of God’s Mark Morton and producer Machine (Lamb Of God, Every Time I Die, King Crimson, etc) on Crux. Speaking on the new album singer John Carbone said “This album is about not giving up. It’s about the furious hope that brings fighters back to their feet again and again. Having answered the call to adventure, having grappled with what will surely be only the first set of trials, having sacrificed and lost so much, ‘Crux’ finds the band at a tipping point. There is nothing left but for the old life to die and the new, true life to begin.” A description like that shows that Moon Tooth are creating lasting music and albums with depth and true artistic expression. Personally, I’m stoked on Moon Tooth and can’t wait for this album and them to tour.

Title Tracks: Alice In Chains

alice-in-chains-logo-music-wallpaper

I have a bunch of new topics coming up shortly and this is one that will definitely be fun. Over the years I’ve really noticed something about bands naming albums after certain songs. Those songs in particular always seem to sum up the album as a whole in a way. One band that I noticed that has a real knack for this is Alice In Chains. The title track songs from their albums always had something more to them. So with that in mind, lets take a listen to these gems.

Alice In Chains- Dirt (from Dirt):

Alice In Chains- Black Gives Way To Blue (from Black Gives Way To Blue):

That Was A Bad Idea: Gene Simmons- Firestarter

Bad ideas happen a lot in music.  I mean A LOT of bad ideas. Sometimes it’s a business decision, a song arrangement, or even a member change/addition. One of the biggest of the bad ideas are cover songs. Sure if you are in your rehearsal studio and you’re messing around it’s fun and silly but, when you actually dare to put it out for the public to hear, that’s a whole other story. I’d like to bring your attention to a cover song that was released in 2004. Gene Simmons, yes THAT Gene Simmons, released a “solo” album in 2004 entitled Asshole. When the album was released the first single from it was a cover of The Prodigy’s “Firestarter.” It’s worth noting too that Dave Navarro lent his guitar playing to this cover. Well, not only did the album flop but, this cover is probably one of the worst covers you’ll ever hear, plus, what Gene looks like and does in the video makes it even worse. Gene Simmons has never been shy about his goal of making money. Just look at all the KISS merchandise there is along with all the other schlock he peddles. This was one of those really bad ideas that will live on in infamy and should you need a laugh, it’s perfect for that.

Live Review: Onesidezero and Slant at Whisky A Go Go

IMG_5578.JPG

It’s always fun when bands you grew up with return to play the venues you once saw them at. Over the many, many years of going to concerts, there is still something fun about heading out to the Sunset Strip and seeing a show. Sure there’s a bit of a nostalgia factor and all the history that is there but, there is something else about seeing bands you really dig at places like the Whisky, Viper Room and Roxy. The other evening, I got to see Onesidezero rock the Whisky stage for the first time in a very long time and it definitely brought back many great memories of seeing them there so many times before.

IMG_5554.JPG

During this evening there were two additional bands that I saw that left a mark on my mind. The first band that intrigued me was Hyvmine. This four piece band reminded me of a proggy version of Sevendust with Meshuggah breakdowns. They were quite a good live band. Their set was full of great riffs and vocals that were soulful and melodic. I wasn’t familiar with the band before this evening and I’m most certainly interested to see where they go with their style of rock. Definitely give them a listen.

The direct support for Onesidezero this evening was the band Slant. This band I’ve heard of and checked out before and was quite interested to check them out. Over the course of the last year or so, they have been building quite the fan base and leaving their mark on the scene. Slant’s set was quite rockin. They have a very cool alternative rock side to them with the right amount of “heavy” to accompany them. Something else that stood out about Slant is their positive outlook in their words. It’s not something you notice right off the bat but, as you listen you really start to hear it. They know how to put on a show and their excitement for playing live shows. I will say though, they really need to not play their cover of U2’s “With or Without You.” Perhaps it’s just me (and I’m pretty sick of bands playing covers) but, it just didn’t do anything for me and it was generic at best but, minus that song, they had quite a good set.

Onesidezero took the stage later than scheduled but, those that were there to see them, like myself, made sure to stay. Since Oneside returned to the stage at the end of 2018, it’s been quite a welcome return. Looking around at the crowd as they played, I saw many familiar faces from over the years and it was quite cool to reconnect with a bunch of older fans like myself. Oneside’s set consisted of gems like “New World Order,” “A Point In Time,” “Instead Laugh,” “Eight,” “Carry Your Gun” and he very awesome “Sleep.” Also played was the soon to be released “Chasing the Sun,” as song that has been around for a bit in the bands history but never got the proper treatment and their new song “Eleven” which is one hell of a good song.

Having a band like Onesidezero back is genuinely a welcome return. They have always had great songs, and are still making great tunes. Plus it doesn’t hurt that they are nice guys too. The whole evening was a great night for rock music and rock music in Los Angeles. Bringing together bands like Slant and Hyvmine to accompany Onesidezero was the right choice. All three of these bands are definitely worth the time to check out and see live. You won’t be disappointed that you did! Also on a side note, the whisky seems to have updated their lights and sound equipment, making for a very enjoyable listening and visual experience!

Band Of The Week: Low Lives

23843184_140686956587634_466487951748174144_n.jpg

Over the last few years there has been a real resurgence of the 90’s sound. Rock bands are starting to really embrace the realness of guitars, bass and drums again. It’s quite nice to hear that quiet to loud noise again. One band I’ve had my eye on for a bit now has truly honed in on that style is the band Lowlives. They have this In Utero era Nirvana sound mixed with a bit of a Silverchair vibe to their sound. The gents in Lowlives have the quiet to loud dynamics down to a science and they have the right amount of melody added to it to make it modern and not stuck in nostalgia. In August of 2018, Lowlives released their Burn Forever EP, which was produced and mixed by Beau Burchell (Saosin, The Bronx, etc) and it’s quite the hard hitting listening experience. Lowlives from everything I’ve seen, are quite the live band as well. Their high energy and passion for what they’ve created emits through each member and out to the audience.

Cover Song: Ryan Adams (Oasis)- Wonderwall

audioeclectica-radio-logo

Ryan Adams is one hell of a talented guy. His ability to constantly put out great songs is astounding. Over the years he has done quite a few cool cover songs. For example he did a version of the Black Flag classic “Nervous Breakdown” that is really quite rad. Anyways, a few years back, Ryan did a cover of the Oasis classic “Wonderwall” and it’s one of those versions that really stands out and made it his own. Even Noel Gallagher has come out and said Ryan is the only one to cover it and “get it.” Enjoy this great version of a truly classic song.

Classic Soundtracks: Demon Knight

R-470024-1287507933.jpeg.jpg

Remember way back, when Tales From The Crypt was on? I know I do. It was such a fun show full of humor, horror and violence. The show was a pretty big success and of course out of that came a couple Tales From The Crypt movies. The first (and best one) was Demon Knight. The movie starred Billy Zane, William Sadler, Jada Pinkett and Thomas Haden Church. The real gem of the movie though was the soundtrack, which consisted of bands like Pantera, Machine Head, Megadeth, Rollins Band, Filter, Ministry and The Melvins to name a few. The choice to make the soundtrack mostly heavy music really gave the movie the right mood. Plus a soundtrack and movie like this in 1995, you knew you were gonna get something worthwhile.
