Slipknot have released a third song from their upcoming seventh album (yes that’s right 7th album). This one entitled “Yen” definitely has a Volume 3 vibe to it with a bit more heaviness. The new album, The End So Far will be out on September 30 via Roadrunner Records. Two other songs “The Dying Song (Time To Sing)” and “The Chapeltown Rag” have already been released.
Slipknot- Yen:
There are certain songs by my favorite bands that I can’t help but listen to on a constant basis. Some of those songs are played at perfect times of the day or night. On such song that I’ve loved since the day I first heard it is “Nothing In Return (Walk Away)” by Down off their album Down III: Over The Under. This song is epic and beautiful. There’s something so powerful about this song that it gives me chills each and every time. The vocals by Philip H. Anselmo on this song are superb. I have had the opportunity to hear this song live a couple times and it’s been one of the highlights of those Down shows. This is not only one of my all time favorite Down songs, it’s one of my favorite songs ever. As an album closer too, this is just perfect. It’s one of those songs too that when it’s over, you want to start it all over again. What a majestic song!
Down- Nothing In Return (Walk Away):
Since today it was announced that Nine Inch Nails is being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame, I thought I’d share one of my all time favorite songs by NIN. This one goes back to 1999 and the absolute masterpiece that is The Fragile. The song I chose to share is, “Somewhat Damaged” and I still, to this very day, anytime I play this album, I get chills when it comes on. It’s also one of the best songs to ever start an album. Not to mention that live, this song is absolutely a beast. Oh and, I’d also like to note that this song was co-written by Danny Lohner, who just so happens to be one of my all time favorite members of Trent’s live band. So with all that in mind, enjoy one of my top 5 favorite Nine Inch Nails songs EVER!
Nine Inch Nails- Somewhat Damaged:
Back in 2002, following the demise of At The Drive In, Sparta (made up of 3 of the members of ATDI) released their debut album, Wiretap Scars, and it left a lasting impact on me. From the moment I heard the first single, “Cut Your Ribbon,” I knew that this band was on to something and it was pretty great. When the album came out, I remember blasting “Cut Your Ribbon” on repeat quite a few times before I let the album play, and then that’s when it all changed. The second song on the album “Air,” was it for me. I couldn’t get past how truly great of a song it was and from that point, it never left my mind. It’s one of those songs that makes it to every long playlist I make as well as when I used to make mixes for people. When you listen to “Air” you get all sorts of feels pumping through your blood. So, take 4 minutes out of your day and let this one take you away.
Sparta- Air:
This new topic will just explore my all time favorite songs of all time. It’s going to be quite fun. I’ll be making a playlist to coincide with this topic on Spotify, as the list goes on.
There are certain songs in every band’s catalog that really mean something special to me. I’m sure many of you out there feel that same notion too, when you hear “that” song. Those songs can take you back to a place or moment, or even just fit the mood and vibe perfectly where you are at. To this day, anytime I head the song “Roads” by Portishead, I get this overtaking feeling of warmth and peace. It’s such a perfect song and it’s so soothing that even if it’s a really shitty day, this song makes it all that much better. I still remember hearing the song 25 years ago while I was listening to Portishead’s first album Dummy. The instant this song came on, I was taken aback and it drew me in. The trip-hop classic has and always will be one of my all time favorite songs. Everything about this song is perfect. The music is subtle and sparce, creating this distant yet warm sensation that wafts over the listener. And the vocals, oh those vocals, are the type that will give you chills in the best way possible. Beth Gibbon’s voice is utterly outstanding on this song (just as it is on all the other Portishead songs). “Roads” is the perfect end of the evening song as you are just getting home or winding down. There have been bands that have covered this song but, it’s impossible to get it right, and it should be forever left to Portishead to play this song. Thankfully in 2008, I had the pleasure to finally see Portishead live and when they played this song, it was a dream come true and one performance that I will not only remember but, cherish as well.
