Memorable TV Performances: Sunny Day Real Estate on The Jon Stewart Show

Back before he hosted The Daily Show, Jon Stewart had a really great talk show on MTV during the mid 90’s. His brand of humor was spot on for the times and one of the best parts of his show was the musical guests he’d have on. One of the most memorable ones that I remember was when Sunny Day Real Estate was on and performed “Seven” from their outstanding debut album, Diary. And now in 2022, it’s been announced, well it will be shortly, that Sunny Day Real Estate will be out on the road again. No word on if Nate Mendel will be joining Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith on tour.

Sunny Day Real Estate are one of those bands that I’ve always had a special connection with. Ever since I first heard them, I knew that this band was something I had to listen to. I’ll never forget hearing their song “Seven” for the first time and thinking about how great this was. Their performance on the MTV show 120 Minutes is one for the books. This morning when I woke up, I had their song “In Circles” in my head and it was in the cards for me to post about that 120 Minutes performance. Their debut album Diary, is one of the best albums of the 90’s. That album has influenced and inspired countless bands and artists over the years. If you’ve never listened to that album, you should really do that!

Songs In Film: Nine Inch Nails Closer in Seven

One of my all time favorite movies is Seven. It’s a damn near perfect film. The performances are great, the story, the realism and of course the soundtrack. I’ll never forget seeing it for the first time and thinking to myself that “THIS” is one hell of a film and I can’t wait to watch it again and again. David Fincher really proved himself as a filmmaker with Seven and his career since than is damn near flawless. The opening credits sequence for the film features Nine Inch Nails’ classic “Closer.” Though it’s technically a remix done by the the experimental group Coil. Either way what a great choice of song to start off the film.
