Memorable TV Performances: Deftones, Incubus & Adam Sandler- Be Quiet and Drive

Way back in the past, there was this network called MTV where all they did was play music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That was when it first started. Then over time they introduced other programming while still being music centric. Nowadays MTV resembles nothing that it once was. The past of MTV though did leave us some lasting memories and great music videos and memorable performances. Some of those performances were quite out of left field at times but, during the moment they were quite intriguing. One such performance that has always stuck in my head was during the promotion of the Adam Sandler movie, Little Nicky. This happened back in the year 2000, Adam Sandler was hosting a special that highlighted his movie and the soundtrack and during this members of Deftones and Incubus (both bands appear on the soundtrack. Incubus has “Pardon Me” on it and Deftones have “Change (In The House Of Flies)” and an acoustic version of “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” on it) joined Adam on the couch for an acoustic version of Deftones’ song “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” from my personal favorite Deftones album, Around The Fur. Side Note, “Be Quiet and Drive” is my all time favorite Deftones song as well. This performance is one of those interesting ones but also memorable. Take a moment and check this out and let me know what you thought of it!

Memorable TV Performances: Sunny Day Real Estate on The Jon Stewart Show

Back before he hosted The Daily Show, Jon Stewart had a really great talk show on MTV during the mid 90’s. His brand of humor was spot on for the times and one of the best parts of his show was the musical guests he’d have on. One of the most memorable ones that I remember was when Sunny Day Real Estate was on and performed “Seven” from their outstanding debut album, Diary. And now in 2022, it’s been announced, well it will be shortly, that Sunny Day Real Estate will be out on the road again. No word on if Nate Mendel will be joining Jeremy Enigk, Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith on tour.

Memorable TV Performances: Quicksand on The Jon Stewart Show

Quicksand - Thorn In My Side & Brown Gargantuan (from Jon Stewart, live 1995) - YouTube

The Jon Stewart Show back in the mid 90’s on MTV was one of the best late night shows. The humor on the show was hilarious and then the musical guests were ground breaking. The 90’s for music guests on TV had so many memorable performances. One of the ones I remember fondly was when Quicksand performed “Thorn In My Side” & “Brown Gargantuan”(though incomplete). The movie Empire Records turned me onto Quicksand and from that point I was hooked. This performance has so much energy permeating that you’ll probably find yourself bobbing your head or breaking out into a one person mosh pit!

Sunny Day Real Estate are one of those bands that I’ve always had a special connection with. Ever since I first heard them, I knew that this band was something I had to listen to. I’ll never forget hearing their song “Seven” for the first time and thinking about how great this was. Their performance on the MTV show 120 Minutes is one for the books. This morning when I woke up, I had their song “In Circles” in my head and it was in the cards for me to post about that 120 Minutes performance. Their debut album Diary, is one of the best albums of the 90’s. That album has influenced and inspired countless bands and artists over the years. If you’ve never listened to that album, you should really do that!

Memorable TV Performances: Jane’s Addiction on MTV 1997

Back in the yesteryear when MTV actually played music, they had some pretty amazing shows that were televised. On Halloween in 1997, Jane’s Addiction played a show at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. This Jane’s reunion would feature Flea on bass instead of Eric Avery. Jane’s Addiction would release the Kettle Whistle record which featured new songs “Kettle Whistle” and “So What” both featured Flea on bass, as well as alternate, unreleased and live tracks. The show for MTV was quite the performance and the set list was top notch. Enjoy this classic gem!
