MAL

New Release: MAL- Come To Light

This is really exciting. One of my favorite bands I’ve written about here, MAL, have released “Come To Light” the first single off their upcoming new album! MAL are a very unique band that will absolutely capture your attention. Combining different genres and elements, MAL’s sound is otherworldly. When you listen to this band you hear all sorts of different things from 90’s alt rock, art rock, prog rock, and even a tinge of post-hardcore but the combination of all this and more is what makes MAL special. They aren’t your run of the mill rock band and this song without a doubt proves that. I’ve had the pleasure to hear this song live a few times now at Cobalt Presents shows and let me tell you, it’s an absolute certified banger. I look forward to what’s to come from MAL and when they are coming through to your town, make it a point to see them live!

Live Review: With Our Arms To The Sun, Socionic, MAL, Kolm @ The Viper Room

13419284_822936204503235_1254381607007926710_n.jpg
One of my favorite things about going to shows is when the lineup fits. Each band that plays the evening fits the bill, and nothing is out of place. Especially when you have a night full of artistic and progressive bands. Last night at the Viper Room, was just that. With Our Arms To The Sun, Socionic, Mal, and Kolm all delivered. The theme of the night for me was passion, and each band had it.

First up for the evening was Kolm. Their blend of prog rock, and metal really set the tone for the night. As a three piece, playing that style is no easy task but they pull it off with passion and great musicianship.

Next up was Mal. Their sound is a mesh of prog rock and 90’s rock. The three guys playing have the ability to mix genres and make something genuinely creative and passionate, and extremely tight. Amongst the songs are heavy grooves and sensible melodies led by singer/guitarist Kris Jung and bassist PJ. Their latest album Aqua Macabre is one album you should definitely check out!

With Our Arms To The Sun was the third band of the night and they absolutely killed it. Playing a set of all new material from their upcoming album Orenda, they didn’t miss a beat and left it all on stage. Each member of this band understands the statement of “playing with passion,” and it shows in each song they play. With Our Arms To The Sun is epic by nature, thus allowing the songs to feel like a journey of emotions as you listen. Singer/guitarist Josh Breckinridge, along with guitarist Joe Leary, bassist Joe Breckinridge and drummer John McLucas, have a unity on stage that is unrivaled by many bands of today. The band live is a different animal. It’s something you should see and won’t regret. I’d even say that if you are a band that has to play after With Our Arms To The Sun, you best bring it all, because they are the real deal.

Closing out the night was Socionic. Their artsy and theatrical set was played with a great deal of passion (there’s that word again). Musically the band is tight and really work to deliver a show. The majority of their set was comprised of songs off their newest album Dividing Horizon. Socionic is one of those bands that seeing them live is the best way. Their album is great to listen to, but just like With Our Arms To The Sun, the best way to experience it is in a live setting.

All in all this was a great night for music and for Los Angeles based bands. The Viper Room is fast becoming a favorite of mine again to see shows. It’s intimacy really gives off a vibe of community, something that has been missing in Los Angeles, especially in that area, for a long amount of time. Every band was meant to be on stage this evening and did it justice. With Our Arms To The Sun and Socionic are gearing up to go on tour together for a few weeks. So when they come through your area, I strongly suggest you make it out to see them. As well as if Mal, and Kolm are playing in Los Angeles. Nights like this and bands like those that played, really give me hope for the music.

Band Of The Week: Kolm

13419284_822936204503235_1254381607007926710_n.jpg

The ability to mix genres is no easy task. There has to be an element of purity to it. Some bands can do it and Kolm is one of those. By mixing progressive rock, with ambient soundscapes, a bit of electronics, and some good old heavy riffs, Kolm has created a captivating sound. Not to mention they do this a three piece band, which brings its own merit. Their self titled EP stretches past the norm and leaves you wanting more. Next week Kolm will be sharing the stage with three other great bands, With Our Arms To The Sun, Socionic, and Mal. I would recommend not missing this show!

Live Review: With Our Arms To The Sun, MAL & Macro at Petie’s Place

20151023_211625

Since I’ve started this site, I’ve seen and heard quite a few bands that will forever be engrained in my brain. One of those bands, With Our Arms To The Sun is fast becoming one of my all time favorites. Musically they captivate you with the first note. Their live shows are beyond an experience. I’d even go as far as saying that seeing them live is life changing. These guys play with every ounce of their being and leave it all on stage. So on Friday night when they took the stage I could sense that this was going to be quite a show. They played with such force throughout their set, leaving no time in between songs to gather themselves, instead going straight into the next song taking no prisoners along the way. They set featured songs from their great album A Far Away Wonder which is being re-released this Friday through Fade To Silence records. Their set was so heavy and epic, that they literally brought the roof down and shattered a few lights due to their intensity and love for their music. When With Our Arms To The Sun comes through any town, you should get there and see them. You won’t be disappointed.

Another band that has been featured on this site, MAL, had their record release that evening too, The songs that I heard from them made me really interested to see them live. This three piece was tight and full of the right amount of energy. Not to take anything away from them, but going on after With Our Arms To The Sun is not easy, yet MAL held their own and made for a fun show that had lots of engagement with the crowd. Their music is full of heavy grooves an sensible melodies that translate really well. MAL are on the right track with what they are doing.

Also playing this evening was Macro. While still in the early stages of playing live, these guys showed a lot of potential into what this band is to come. They have a cool vibe to them that is similar to Science era Incubus mixed with a lot of other alternative rock of the 90’s.

This evening was what music is all about. All the bands playing made for a tremendous evening that showed the power of passionate music. To quote the movie School of Rock, “One great rock show can change the world.” Be on the look out for With Our Arms To The Sun, they are on the right track to become your next favorite band and will leave you speechless.

Band Of The Week: MAL

11001536_10152723842696446_2888187563296658093_oI really enjoy when friends of mine recommend bands to me. Recently, my friend Josh of with Our Arms To The Sun (a band that you all should listen to) told me about this band MAL. After giving them a listen I really enjoyed what I heard. These guys have the ability to mix genres and make something genuinely creative. Blending their love of alternative rock, stoner rock, and progressive rock, MAL has been able to create music that is captivating to listen to.  This three piece band really digs deep in their craft. Their newest song Acqua Macabre is part Rush, Tool, and Failure. Musically these guys really know their instruments and know to go from quiet to loud at the right time. I really look forward to seeing what these guys do.
